What Is a Crypto ETF? Structure, Types & How It Works

Crypto ETFs let investors access digital assets without holding them directly. Learn how they work, the key types, and how tokenized funds compare.

U.S. crypto ETFs crossed $94.88 billion in assets under management across 89 funds as of early September 2026, according to ETF Action. That number didn't exist two years ago. What Is a Crypto ETF? The Plain-English Definition

A crypto ETF is an exchange-traded fund that gives investors exposure to one or more digital assets through a standard brokerage account, without requiring them to buy, store, or manage cryptocurrency directly. You don't need a wallet. You don't need to understand private keys. You buy shares the same way you'd buy Apple stock or an S&P 500 index fund.

Like equity ETFs, crypto ETFs trade on regulated exchanges throughout the day, with prices updating continuously. The fund's custodian holds the underlying assets on behalf of investors, and the SEC classifies these products under its existing ETF regulatory framework. Put simply, it's the most familiar wrapper the financial industry has ever put around a historically unfamiliar asset class.

Spot vs. Futures Crypto ETFs: What the Difference Actually Means for Your Returns

Not all crypto ETFs are built the same. The distinction between spot and futures products matters more here than it does in most other asset categories.

Spot ETFs hold the actual underlying cryptocurrency in custody. The fund's net asset value (NAV) moves directly with the market price of the asset. What you see is what you get.

Futures ETFs hold derivative contracts that speculate on the future price of a cryptocurrency. They don't hold Bitcoin or Ether directly. How Crypto ETFs Are Structured: Custody, Creation, and Redemption

The mechanics behind crypto ETFs borrow heavily from traditional ETF architecture, with one critical addition: a qualified custodian for the underlying digital assets.

Here's the thing: the authorised participant (AP) model is what keeps ETF prices honest. Large financial institutions, typically broker-dealers, create and redeem ETF shares in large blocks called "creation units." When an ETF trades at a premium to its NAV, APs buy the underlying assets and exchange them for new ETF shares, pushing the price back down. When it trades at a discount, they do the reverse. This arbitrage mechanism is why ETF prices stay close to NAV.

For spot crypto ETFs, the custody layer is where the real infrastructure complexity lives. Funds must use a qualified custodian under SEC Rule 206(4)-2, with major providers including Coinbase Custody and BitGo. One important caveat for investors accustomed to holding crypto directly: ETF ownership confers no on-chain rights. There's no staking yield, no governance participation, and no ability to move assets on-chain. The fund manager controls the underlying assets entirely. Crypto ETFs solved a real problem: they made digital asset exposure accessible to anyone with a brokerage account. But they also inherited the limitations of traditional fund structures. Tokenized funds address these constraints at the infrastructure level. Crypto ETFs win on accessibility. Any investor with a brokerage account can buy them today, no blockchain knowledge required, no wallet setup, no onboarding friction. Tokenized funds win on structural efficiency. Real-time auditability, yield pass-through, programmable compliance, and 24/7 settlement are capabilities that the ETF wrapper, by design, cannot replicate. That said, the two aren't mutually exclusive.
